The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires employee testing for companies that employ or use professional drivers, specified safety-sensitive transportation and/or oil and gas-related occupations, and certain federal employers. Specifically, the DOT requires urine testing for five controlled substances: marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, cocaine and phencyclidine (PCP). The DOT rules for "Procedures for Transportation Workplace Drug Testing Programs" set the standards for employer drug testing. These procedures are detailed and specific; to perform them properly, employees need sufficient training.
